Self-Directed Care for Florida Seniors

Many seniors will need some form of assistance if they become ill or develop a disease. However, the needs of all seniors will vary. Some seniors will benefit from self-directed care, in which they will be involved in the decisions regarding what type of care and services they need and who will be providing this care. The information below can help assess Florida seniors for self-directed care.

  1. Always take the time to ask the senior their views on the situation. Involve family members in these discussions as well. Also be sure to ask the senior if they have any interest in adult daycare programs.
  2. Make note of how the senior functions on a daily basis. It is important to know whether they can care for themselves in any way. Some seniors may require minimal assistance, such as with keeping up with laundry or getting to appointments.
  3. Be sure that the safety needs of the senior are always being met.
  4. It is important to make sure seniors feel safe in their home. Ask them if this is the case. In addition, spiritual beliefs should be supported and social needs tended to. Seniors should not be isolated from the rest of the world just because they are old and may have an illness.

Tax Tips for Filing Seniors

Florida Home care helps seniors live happy, healthy, and independent lives in their own homes.

When seniors file their taxes, they may be missing some important credits or deductions. If possible, it is best to have a professional prepare taxes for a senior. They will be able to determine what deductibles can be applied and whether the senior can be eligible for tax credits. The following list provides seniors with some useful tips for tax time.

1. Make sure to know about any taxes on compensation. If you are still working, your income will be taxed at the normal rate. However, if you itemize your taxes and make use of exemptions and deductions, you will have a lower tax bill.

2. There are many deductions available for seniors. For example, seniors who itemize their taxes can deduct property tax, charitable gifts and medical expenses. These are only a few of the available deductions.

3. An exemption occurs when an individual is not required to pay a tax. If you are preparing your own taxes, you may want to consult a professional to inquire about exemptions.

4. Most seniors are receiving Social Security payments each month. If the senior has an additional form of income, this income will be used to determine if taxed must be paid on any earnings from Social Security. This usually applies to seniors who have higher incomes than normal.

Tips for Seniors About Sodium

All seniors should be aware of their daily sodium intake. Not only does sodium play a role in high blood pressure, it can also cause other health issues. Seniors who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure should try to reduce their sodium intake. This will help lower blood pressure and can have many other benefits. The following list provides some facts and tips which Home Care Florida believes all seniors should be aware of in order to lower daily sodium intake.

1. The government passed regulation to label products differently. Anything with more than 480 mg will be labeled as high in sodium.

2. When you reduce sodium intake, you will notice foods taste differently. Do not give up. In a short time, your taste buds will adjust!

3. Do not cut out sodium completely. The body does require some intake. For adults, the minimum amount is 200-500mg/day. Those with high blood pressure should not exceed 1500mg/day.

4. Lower intake by reading food labels and being aware of sodium contents, make records of daily sodium intake, change some eating habits and find low-sodium alternatives to what you normally eat.

5. When dining out, eat from the salad bar and avoid soups and sauces. Also ask for a low-sodium menu.

6. Read labels. Manufacturers are required to tell you how much sodium is in a product based on a serving size. Look at the serving size and then at how much sodium is in each size.

7. Keep in mind that many of your medications may contain sodium. Check with your doctor for tips on how to lower sodium intake. Also remember that tap water contains sodium as well, so try to drink bottled or filtered water.

Blood Pressure Tips – How to Lower Yours

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is one of the most common disorders affecting the senior population. When a person has high blood pressure, they are at a higher risk of a heart attack or stroke, as well as other health issues. Seniors are now finding ways to lower their blood pressure by making some changes to their lifestyles.

Home Care Florida wants to remind all seniors that they should consult their doctor before making any  drastic changes to their diet and exercise. The following tips however are a good starting place for anyone looking to lower blood pressure.

1. Reduce sodium intake. Daily intake for seniors or anyone over 50 should be less than 2,300 mg per day. Take the saltshaker off the table and try to eat foods that are low in sodium.

2. Change cooking habits and do not use salt. There are other ways to get great flavor when cooking. Use herbs and spices and avoid using bullion and prepared sauces. They contain high amounts of sodium. When dining out, ask for food to be prepared without salt or request a low sodium menu.

3. Check the medications you are currently taking. Many of them do contain sodium. Talk to your doctor about adding an aspirin to your daily regime. This can reduce chances of stroke and heart attack.

4. Reduce stress, add some exercise and quit smoking. All of these will lower your blood pressure. Losing a few pounds will also be beneficial.

5. If you can, monitor your blood pressure at home. If these changes do not work, you may have to ask for a prescription medication. Doctors will also suggest increasing your potassium intake.

Exercise is one of these ways. By adding an exercise program to your daily life, you will lower the risks and reap many benefits. Below is a list that contains some tips about exercise.

Before making changes to a diet or adding exercise, Home Care Florida wants to remind all seniors that they should always talk to their doctors first. Be sure to ask about medications, the ability to lift heavy objects and what exercises are safe for you.

Goals That Work for You

Not everyone’s the same when it comes to their goals and that’s often where New Year’s resolutions go wrong. At Home Care Florida we know that many seniors feel they need to vow to improve their health through diet and exercise, and while these are positive goals, if your heart’s not in it you’re not going to stick to them. Instead, think about one of these unique resolution ideas:

1. Educate yourself – you’re never too old for learning. Pursue an interest; go back to school and take advantage of the discounts for seniors who want to return to college. Or take a class that teaches you more about another hobby like a craft or physical activity like dance

2. Expand your career – if you’re a senior who’s still in the workforce, make the best of your last few years in a career and do something you really enjoy. Even if you’re not working for an income, volunteer somewhere that fulfills you

3. Take a trip – if you’ve been dreaming of getting away somewhere, make it your goal this year. You can take the opportunity to plan and save. It doesn’t have to be something glamorous; even a journey to visit family that normally comes to you makes for a change of pace

4. Work on organization – sometimes with age, people become more sentimental. You may find that your home is becoming more cluttered. Take the opportunity to get your home organized for a safer and more comfortable environment

5. Develop new relationships – whether it’s romance you have in mind, or just feel you’d benefit from increasing your social circle; get out there and network!

How The Elderly Can Keep New Year’s Resolutions

Here at Home Care Florida, we know that with the addition of years, keeping promises and resolutions can be a greater struggle. However, it does not have to be for seniors. If goals are simplified and mindsets altered, seniors should have no problems with keeping their New Year’s resolutions past January.

• Keep Your Resolutions To A Minimum—If you have a laundry list of resolutions staring you in the face, discouragement will eventually follow when all goals are not met. Try to only make one or two resolutions for the New Year.

• Goals Should be Realistic – Weight loss or spending resolutions with large goals tend to fly out the window past January. Start small with any resolution. Losing a small amount of weight a week in comparison to setting a 20-pound goal for the month will be much easier to keep going.

• Be patient and don’t get discouraged—The saying “old habits die hard” could not be truer when it comes to New Years resolutions. Correcting old habits will take a while to change. Setbacks may present themselves, so do not get discouraged and punish yourself for falling back on an old habit.

• Give Yourself a Pat on the Back—When you accomplish a goal, reward yourself. Being proud of your accomplishments will give that additional incentive to keep up your resolutions just for how good it makes you feel.

Couples Growing Older in Support

elderly coupleAt Home Care Florida, we know that growing old together means setting mutual goals, and one of the best ways to accomplish your goals is to go into them together and motivate and support each other throughout the process. Accomplishing goals together will help increase your bond in older adulthood.

1. Improve your health together – you’ll be better motivated if the person that you live with and spend most of your time with has the same goals. When you go out to eat, make healthier choices together and find exercise activities you enjoy doing together

2. Eat at home – it’s easier to make healthy choices when you eat at home. Vow to dine in more often, and try to incorporate unique recipes you enjoy eating out into a healthy home diet

3. Get out and explore – many seniors have lived in their city for decades and have come to take it for granted. Each week, get out there with your spouse and explore a museum and a local park. You’ll appreciate the local culture and get moving at the same time

4. Eliminate bad habits – spouses may not have the same bad habit, though they can encourage one another to eliminate theirs. Quit smoking while your loved one cuts back on drinking

Seniors Get Help from Caregivers

As a senior caregiver, you already lend your support in so many areas of your loved one’s life. One more area you can give them a hand is in helping them set and achieve goals to improve the quality of their life. Your support coupled with their desire to succeed will be the perfect recipe for success!

1. Help form a support team – you don’t have to do it alone! Help your loved one form a support network that will help them reach their goals. If it’s to eat better, consider hiring a nutritionist and encourage friends and family to adopt healthier eating habits around them too. If it’s exercise, attend classes with your senior and ask others to do the same.

2. Remind him/her it’s not always going to be easy – especially for seniors who often face so many challenges later in life, it’s easy to give up on something that’s not coming easy. Often, resolutions that will drastically change their life aren’t going to be easy. Certain goals can be physically and emotionally challenging, so give them a friendly push when needed

3. A slip up doesn’t mean give up – as part of overcoming the challenges that can come with new goals, seniors need to keep on going even if they slip up along the way. In that situation, encourage them to learn from what they were doing wrong, then put it behind them and move forward. Ask them if there’s anything you can do to give them a hand with starting new!

Achieving Goals Throughout the Year

Senior and grandchild riding bikes togetherThe vast majority of individuals who make New Year’s resolutions don’t stick to them. In fact, the average person abandons their goals only about a month after they’ve made them. Seniors can achieve their goals throughout the year, if they only take steps to stick to them:

1. Focus on fun – particularly when it comes to losing weight or starting an exercise program, the resolution can become a burden rather than something you desire to achieve. Find exercise activities you enjoy, and if your resolutions have nothing to do with weight loss or exercise; ensure you go about attaining your goals in a way that’s focused on fun!

2. Think about your future today – if you have goals for the future, there’s no better time than now to start working towards achieving them. You might have excuses, whether it’s related to your age, your health, the logistics of getting around or something else; but those are aspects unlikely to change so take the bull by the horns and work towards the goals you set

3. Talk to others – if you tell others about your goals, you’ll be more likely to stick to them. It almost creates a challenge, since you’ll be encouraged to tell your friends and family that you’re successful rather than failing at your New Year’s resolutions. This also gives you a support network for encouragement
