Senior Information on Cancer Prevention

Florida Elder Care helps seniors live happy, healthy, and independent lives in their own homes.

Cancer prevention is an important area of concern for many seniors. As we age, our immune system becomes weaker, which can increase the risks associated with cancer. Prevention is possible if seniors follow some of the tips that are provided below. There are certain types of cancer that can be prevented just by taking some precautionary steps.

1. Have routine screenings. This is important for senior women. Having annual screenings for breast and cervical cancer can help reduce the risk of developing cancer. It will also allow for early detection if cancer does develop which increases the chances of survival.

2. Seniors should try to avoid using tobacco and alcohol. By avoiding these things, cancer can be avoided. Seniors should also use caution when exposed to ultraviolet rays. This will help prevent skin cancer.

3. Eating a well-balanced diet can also help prevent cancer. By adding fresh fruits and vegetables to a daily diet, seniors will get the necessary nutrients needed to battle cancer.

4. There are various vaccines available that will prevent certain types of cancer. These include the human papilloma virus vaccine and Hepatitis B vaccine.

5. The more information seniors have on cancer, the better they will be able to avoid it. Screenings, vaccines and healthy lifestyles are essential.

Information for Seniors on Staying Active

Our Florida Senior care helps seniors live happy, healthy, and independent lives in their own homes.

All seniors should have some kind of physical activity every day. Short walks or simple exercises are great ways to keep the body moving and improve health. Seniors who are physically active on a daily basis have fewer health problems than those who do not engage in any physical activity. The following list contains some useful tips on staying active and how seniors can benefit.

1. Physical activity on a daily basis can help prevent frailty. It can even reverse the signs of frailty. Seniors should be active for a short period every day. The more physical activity a senior engages in, the better they will feel. They will also maintain health and keep muscles and bones strong.

2. Daily exercise can have mental and emotional benefits as well. It has been shown that exercise can help battle depression. Many seniors suffer from depression and an increase in physical activity may help.

3. When a senior engages in daily physical activity, they are strengthening their body and their mind. This can help in the future as health issues begin to occur. Seniors can tolerate aging issues and problems much better by building their physical and mental reserves from physical activity.

4. Being active does not have to involve anything strenuous. Seniors should be as active as possible. Some seniors do have physical restrictions which may not allow for extensive activity. It is suggested that seniors engage in as much activity as they can tolerate.

Food Poisoning Facts – What Seniors Should Know

Florida Home Care helps seniors live happy, healthy, and independent lives in their own homes.

When seniors are preparing their own meals, it is important that they are aware of food safety. There are some tips that are provided in the list below that will ensure food is being prepared and stored properly. If these tips are not used, seniors may run the risk of food poisoning and foodborne illness. Food safety is extremely important for any senior who prepares their own meals.

1. Hand washing is essential. More than half of the potential cases of foodborne illness can be removed by properly washing your hands. Make sure to wash hands before, during and after all food preparation. Washing during preparation reduces the chances of cross-contamination.

2. Check refrigerator settings to make sure the food is being stored properly. The setting should be below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. After shopping, put perishables away quickly.

3. Clean the refrigerator often. Any lunch meat that has been open for more than 5 days should be discarded.

4. When thawing food, do not just leave them on a counter. Place them in the refrigerator overnight to thaw them properly. Foods can also be thawed by running them under cool water or placing them in the microwave, but both of these methods should only be used if the food will be prepared immediately.

5. Wash preparation surfaces often to prevent contamination. This is very important when preparing raw meats. It is suggested to have two separate cutting boards, one for raw meat, poultry and fish and the other for breads and vegetables.

6. Be aware of proper cooking temperatures. Always make sure food is thoroughly cooked.

Healthy Eating Tips for Seniors

Florida Home Care helps seniors live happy, healthy, and independent lives in their own homes.

Healthy eating is the key to staying healthy. Seniors often do not eat foods that provide essential nutrients. Since seniors do not eat as much as younger adults, it is important for them to make sure what they do eat is healthy. The following list provides some tips for seniors on healthy eating.

1. Variety is the spice of life! Just because seniors do not require as many calories as younger adults, this does not mean they cannot mix up their daily diets. Having a variety of foods in a diet is a great way to get the proper nutrition while enjoying what is being eaten.

2. Fruits and vegetables are essential. It doesn’t matter if they are fresh, frozen or canned, but having daily servings of fruits and vegetables will provide the body with essential nutrients. Dark green and orange vegetables should be included in a diet.

3. Seniors require protein, so make sure a diet contains some beans, fish or peas.

4. Whole-grain products are very beneficial. Try to switch from white bread to whole-grain bread. Cereal, rice and pasta are also available in whole-grain.

5. When eating dairy, make sure it is low-fat. Seniors should keep an eye on their fat intake, so low-fat milk, yogurt and cheese should be incorporated into the diet. Make sure the products are fortified with Vitamin D as well.

6. When consuming foods with fat, try to choose foods that contain healthy fats. These include monosaturated and polysaturated fats.

Convincing a Senior to Accept Senior Care Help

Seniors don’t like to feel like they’re going to lose their independence; after being in control of their own lives for so many years, it can be hard to accept help from a family member or even a professional caregiver. Seniors might be in denial that they receive help, or they might be insulted by the idea; but whatever their resistance, convincing a loved one help is needed can be a big challenge. Here are a few ways that you can convince a senior to accept senior care help when it’s needed:

1. Remember change is difficult for everyone – their resistance might be frustrating, but think about how you would feel in the same situation
2. Give him/her time to come around – introduce changes slowly, but don’t force them. Eventually, the changes if for your senior’s benefit will be more accepted, once they get past denying they need help
3. Keep on trying – if you try to introduce a change and it’s not accepted, wait and try again. Sometimes even 15 minutes can make a world of difference
4. Keep them involved in decisions – let your senior know he/she does have a say in making decisions about care. However, do try and be persuasive about introducing care options
5. Offer a trial period – if they are resistant, persuade your senior to give your suggestion a try. A trial period with a home caregiver or with you helping around the house may help them to realize how much it can ease their burden
6. Present it as help for them – when suggesting you help them out or hire a caregiver, don’t present it as a result of their limitations, tell them it’s to have someone available to clean up around the house so they don’t feel obligated, or to help with moving of heavy objects
7. Know when to stop pushing – remember, that despite your concerns, your senior is still someone who is capable and allowed to make their own decisions. If you have tried the above to no avail, no when to stop pushing otherwise you might risk your relationship
