Men Becoming Caregivers

Older Men Being Caregivers

Being a caregiver is a difficult thing to do. There are many things you will now be responsible for. For many men, this is an overwhelming thing. They are not used to being the one to provide the care in the home. When this happens, many men will be reluctant to do certain things, such as helping with hygiene. This is very common. Below is a list of some other things that men will deal with as a caregiver.

1. Most men who become a caregiver will take a different approach than a female. Men are more apt to take on executive or long-distance tasks, such as dealing with the insurance companies or making appointments.

2. Men are only half as likely to perform hands on tasks when they are a caregiver.

3. The men who do help with daily tasks, such as dressing and showering may be reluctant to discuss their role. It seems as though they are slightly embarrassed about having to be the caregiver.

4. Many of these men will suffer from depression and feelings of inadequacy when they are a caregiver. This is actually quite normal. They have a hard time talking about their role with others because of how they feel it will make them look.

Seniors Get Help from Caregivers

As a senior caregiver, you already lend your support in so many areas of your loved one’s life. One more area you can give them a hand is in helping them set and achieve goals to improve the quality of their life. Your support coupled with their desire to succeed will be the perfect recipe for success!

1. Help form a support team – you don’t have to do it alone! Help your loved one form a support network that will help them reach their goals. If it’s to eat better, consider hiring a nutritionist and encourage friends and family to adopt healthier eating habits around them too. If it’s exercise, attend classes with your senior and ask others to do the same.

2. Remind him/her it’s not always going to be easy – especially for seniors who often face so many challenges later in life, it’s easy to give up on something that’s not coming easy. Often, resolutions that will drastically change their life aren’t going to be easy. Certain goals can be physically and emotionally challenging, so give them a friendly push when needed

3. A slip up doesn’t mean give up – as part of overcoming the challenges that can come with new goals, seniors need to keep on going even if they slip up along the way. In that situation, encourage them to learn from what they were doing wrong, then put it behind them and move forward. Ask them if there’s anything you can do to give them a hand with starting new!

Understanding a Senior’s Health

There are a number of common health issues that older adults face. Some might fall into the realm of normal, while others can be more concerning. Oftentimes both of these categories surface in similar ways:

1. Symptoms from medical side effects – side effects that develop from medications should be discussed with a doctor. Some side effects might be normal; others might be a result of mixed medications. All concerns should be addressed with a medical professional

2. Awareness of self-medication – when caregivers see signs that a senior is self-medicating, it should be addressed. Even using over-the-counter medications combined with multiple prescriptions can cause complications

3. Understanding anxiety and depression – unmanaged depression can lead to more serious health complications. Caregivers should recognize the signs and encourage their loved ones to receive treatment

4. Changes in mobility – although physical changes can occur with seniors, changes in mobility do need to be addressed. First, a doctor can investigate any underlying medical problems; and second, changes to a senior’s home can be made to make it a safer environment

Caregivers Converse on Incontinence

Many senior caregivers are hesitant to talk to the loved one that they care for about incontinence even after it’s an issue that they are facing. It’s an embarrassing subject from all sides, but it is possible to get through it and ensure care isn’t compromised because of lack of communication.

1. Ease into the issues gently – caregivers need to ensure when talking about incontinence, that they appear concerned. They can’t make it into a personal issue or make the senior feel embarrassed

2. Understand if it’s appropriate for you to bring up the topic – depending upon your relationship with your senior care recipient, you might want to bring up the topic, or have a friend or medical professional break the ice

3. Try to anticipate how they might react – if you’re bringing up the topic yourself, or even if you’ve talked to a doctor about approaching the subject of incontinence, try to anticipate how the senior might react. Will he/she be embarrassed? Combative? Accepting? This can help you to manage the situation better

4. Empathize – let them know that you care, and while you can’t understand exactly what they’re dealing with, make sure they know you hate that they’re going through it and are there for them

5. Know when to back off – particularly when approaching such a touchy subject, don’t push too hard about your beliefs; know when to back off

6. Talk to a doctor – encourage the senior to seek medical attention to determine the source of the incontinence and appropriate treatment. Caregivers can provide in-depth details to medical professionals if seniors are uncomfortable talking about it

Preparing for a Growing Need in Senior Care

senior in a hospital bedIt’s hard to make assumptions about what future generations of seniors might face, but a new study indicates that boomers and later generations of seniors might have to cope with more disabilities. A study conducted revealed that seniors just might develop increased instances of conditions that can affect their mobility and health; requiring additional medical care and senior care services. With this information out there, these industries have the opportunities to plan:

1. Caregivers can arm themselves with knowledge – with this study already circulating, professional caregivers and families with other generations alike can take this opportunity to become more knowledgeable. Professional caregivers can increase their knowledge about dealing with disabled seniors on a large scale, and families can take a long hard look at their prospective care options should this issue become a reality for their family

2. Organizations can improve personal mobility devices – new technology that can assist in the senior care industry is constantly becoming available on the market, but if  there is a greater need that’s upcoming, there’s room for further development and preparation

3. Studies can focus on preventative measures – increased numbers of disabled seniors, particularly if the boomer demographic is affected, could put a strain on the health care system. With this knowledge, health care professionals care work proactively to try and find preventative medicine or establish techniques that may reduce the likelihood that the number of disabled seniors will increase

Healthy Emergency Snack Ideas for Caregivers

Most caregivers know the importance of providing healthy meals to their elderly care recipients, but some don’t think about making these options available when they’re on the go or out on a day trip. To ensure that a senior’s energy levels remain strong throughout the day, having quick healthy snacks and meals available to them will help stave off the detrimental physical effects of hunger and keeping seniors in high spirits. Try these healthy snack ideas:

1. Fruits – fruits are easy to pop into a bag or purse to take with you wherever you go. Try an apple, orange, or banana; these don’t bruise as easily and are easily transportable without mess. You can also take mixed berries in a small Tupperware container.

2. Dried fruits and vegetables – dried items really can go anywhere with you, and they offer the same nutritional benefits as the fresh variety. Take raisins, cranberries, banana chips, vegetable chips or other dried produce items

3. Take trail mix – trail mix is designed for snacking on the go; you can either purchase one ready-mixed that is low in sodium and sugary content or make your own with mixed nuts, dried fruit, cereal, and even dark chocolate chips

4. Enjoy fresh vegetables – slice up some raw vegetables like carrots, cucumber, celery, mixed peppers and other vegetables that won’t begin to turn brown right after they’re sliced

5. Carry crackers – make some crackers (whole grain) with peanut butter or cheese for added protein, that will give you needed energy restoration during the day

6. Take a thermos – using an insulated thermos will allow you to take soup, or cold drinks out with you

What snacks do you take with you to keep your care recipient well nourished? If you’re a caregiver, we’d like to hear your emergency snack ideas.

Typing Faster Saves Time!

If you’re a family caregiver, particularly one who also has a career and family of their own, you know that every single second of every day counts, especially if it manages to sneak you in a few minutes of free time that’s just for you! Since you likely use the computer as a major communication tool, just learning to type faster will save you time in every day. Here are some tips to get you started!

1. Choose a comfortable keyboard – a comfortable keyboard that is well laid out for your hands is crucial to learning to type well and type quickly. If you have a laptop, using a laptop keyboard is okay if you’re spending no more than a couple of hours a day typing, but any longer and it can do damage to your hands

2. Get in position – make sure you’re seated comfortably when you sit down to type. The keyboard should be at the right position for your hands, and you should sit up straight. Proper positioning of your body will reduce errors and therefore decrease the time it takes you to type

3. Learn hand positioning- if you’ve never been taught proper keyboard position, now’s a great time to start. Learning finger positioning will help improve your typing speed vastly when you no longer need to look at the keys or type with just a couple of fingers at a time. Software programs and online tutorials can help you learn!

4. Practice – once you’ve mastered the above, you need to practice to improve your speed, but eventually you’ll find you could cut hours off your day!

Caregivers Can Help Seniors Relive Their Past

One of the greatest advantages of modern digital processing technology is the ability to forever store and edit images.  Current media is prime for transforming your memories and relics of childhood, first loves, and marriage into a format that is easy to access and forever safe.

Several months ago, one of our CAREGivers, upon the request of a client prepared, a DVD movie including music, chapter separation, and interviews for the client’s family.  When the client passed away recently, Home Instead was able to present to the family several copies of the DVD at a special memorial service that the CAREGivers who knew their grandma so well were able to attend.

The DVD was presented along with a framed portrait done by another Home Instead CAREGiver. The CAREGivers were not hired for their abilities as artists or digital media gurus, rather as trained and compassionate companions.  However, Home Instead was not surprised to find out that the people they had hired were so multi-facetted and willing to give of themselves.

At this dinner, the family alongside their beloved mother’s CAREGivers, was able to watch the story of her life and their own special places in it.  For this group, it was a truly special opportunity to share and love alike.

In your own family’s future, consider the opportunity to have a Home Instead CAREGiver chronicle and record your past.  This can be a wonderful way to celebrate the lives of those around you while they are with you and afterward.
