Senior-Friendly Craft Ideas
Q – I’m a senior home caregiver in Florida, my elderly care recipient has limited mobility that prevents us from doing activities that requires too much physical movement. Can you suggest any fun activities that we can do at home? We like crafts, but find it’s hard to come up with new ideas because often activities only last through the afternoon.
A – If you enjoy doing crafts with your Florida senior then quilt making is one great activity that you might enjoy. Unlike other craft projects which don’t take a very long period of time to complete, quilting requires patience and perseverance because it is a long-term project. It can also give seniors a sense of accomplishment once they complete something that they’ve been working on over a period of time, and the teamwork required to complete a quilt together, senior and caregiver, will help bring you closer.
You will need to make a few purchases in order to start quilt making with your senior care recipient, so when you visit the fabric store to get started, bring the following list with you:
• Transparent rulers
• Ruler handle
• Rotary cutter and mat
• Fabric scissors
• Quilters measuring tape
• Curved safety pins
• Quilt pins
• Quilting thread
• Walking foot
• Marking tools
• Fabric eraser
• Hand quilting needles
• Thimble
• Quilting pattern/templates
• Sewing machine quilting needles (if you plan to use a machine)
• Fabric for quilting
• Threader with magnifying glass
• Crafters magnifying glasses
• Table leg risers to increase table height and reduce bending
