The Gift of Relaxation

During the holidays, many Florida caregivers are under even more stress. This is the time of year that many seniors need more care, which places a lot of tension on a caregiver. When looking for the perfect gift for a caregiver, consider time. Though it cannot be wrapped and placed under the tree, it will be a gift that is much appreciated and needed. Below are some ways to help caregivers get through the stress of the holidays.

1.            Time is a commodity that is perishable. We can never get lost time back. During this time of year, many caregivers will need a break but will often not ask for help. Give the gift of time and make a difference.

2.            By offering to help with the care of a senior, it will allow a caregiver time to do something for themselves. Whether it is spent with family or just as a day of relaxation, this is a gift that will be well received.

3.            There are many sacrifices that caregivers make on a regular basis. They give up time with friends and family and pass up many opportunities. Offering to step in and give the caregiver some time off is one of the best holiday gifts possible.

4.            Time off will also allow caregivers to recharge their batteries. Being a caregiver is an exhausting job and many caregivers will neglect their own health to care for another. Time off will allow them the chance to rest up and clear their minds.

Great Gift Ideas

With the Christmas season right around the corner, many people will be looking for the perfect gift for seniors. However, this can often be a challenge. It is hard to determine what Florida seniors actually want and need, so shopping for the perfect gift can seem like an endless chore. The list below offers some great tips on buying a gift for a senior. These gifts are affordable and can offer many benefits to seniors.

1. Blankets and throws will always be a great gift. Many seniors feel chilled and will enjoy being able to wrap up in a warm blanket.
2. Slippers and new socks are great gifts as well. While they may not seem like such a huge thing, seniors need to keep their feet warm and most seniors will wear their slippers all year long.
3. Many older women will enjoy receiving some lotions and bath soaps. However, before buying these, make sure the senior has no allergies to certain scents.
4. Bath robes and new pajamas will be useful and appreciated. Warm winter clothing such as sweaters, pants and thermal underwear make nice senior gifts.
5. Many seniors have trouble seeing, yet they enjoy reading and doing puzzles. If you can find books that are large print, make sure to include these as a gift.
6. Most seniors are living on a very tight budget. Giving a gift card to a supermarket or discount store will be very helpful, allowing the senior to buy some food or items for the home.

How Mother’s Day Got Started

With Mother’s Day coming up this week, it’s time to show appreciation to those mothers who have been there for us throughout our lives. Those mothers who we are there for now that they are aging. But while we appreciate them, we may not know how Mother’s Day came about. There are a number of different historical perspectives from different cultures and all of them recognize that joy and appreciation of motherhood.

•    Egyptian Roots with the Goddess Isis – in ancient Egypt, an annual festival was held to honour the goddess Isis, considered the mother of the pharaohs.

•    Ancient Roman History with Cybele – initially in Roman tradition, Isis was also recognized, marking the beginning of winter with a 3-day celebration. However, Mother’s Day also recognizes the Phrygian goddess Cybele who was Rome’s version of Rhea, considered the mother of many of the major deities. These celebrations were said to be very wild, and were banned until later the focus shifted to giving flowers and eating cake

•    European History for Lent and the Mother Church – in Europe, on the fourth Sunday lent, individuals honoured the church where they were baptized which was known as the “Mother Church”. Flowers and jewels were placed around the place of worship as offerings.

These Mother’s Day celebrations of the past have similarities to what is celebrated here today in Canada on the second Sunday of May.
